The Rotary Club of San Jose East/Evergreen continues to show it is the small club with the big heart. Last year, we gave 7 deserving students in the Eastside Union High School District 7 scholarships of $4,000 each for a total of $28,000. This year, the number of scholarships will be 8 and again each will be worth $4000 for a total of $32,000.
Small club with a big heart has two International projects with which we partner. One is a literacy project in India and the other is a health project in Israel.
Well in addition to the community type work locally and internationally, we have our schedule of lunchtime speakers and topics that are getting known in the area. Judge for yourself by attending a meeting and see the number of attendees. Here is our program list for the next few weeks.
On February 4, our two newest members, Denise Hankes and John Goldstein, will be the program. They will each give a 15 minute talk about themselves, family, passions, etc.
This program will be great for anyone interested in joining the club since you will see the high caliber of the people that join the Rotary Club of San Jose East/Evergreen (SJEE) and the wonderful enthusiasm they have for the work the club does.
It will also be a great time for longer term members we might not have seen for a while to get back into the swing of things. As you can tell, the club is starting to grow, we have inducted 5 new members since July 1, 2015. From serving on the District 5170 Membership Committee, I know that inducting 5 new members is one of the highest for any club in the District. There are more potential members that will shortly submit applications. Soooooooooo.......now is the time to help us grow the club..............
On February 11, Hilbert Morales, Publisher Emeritus of El Observador, the Spanish language newspaper in San Jose and a regular visitor to the club, will speak on the role of local community news in its development socially, economically, and influence on public policy. He will look at how the city of San Jose changed from a citywide election to election by district. I am sure that his wife Betty will add to the talk with her observations over the years.
On February 18, the program will be an overview of The Rotary Foundation given by Charlie, the India project given by Nick, and the Jerusalem project given by Richard. You will come away from this program amazed at the variety of programs The Rotary Foundation does but also how many individual Rotarians and Rotary Clubs fund projects outside of The Rotary Foundation.
Come join us for the programs. If you are receiving this email, and are not yet a Rotarian, think about how much stronger the club will be which will lead to that much more that we all can do in the Eastside and Evergreen with you joining the club.
See you soon at the Ranch Golf Club on Thursdays at 12:00 pm and join us for lunch.
