Meeting Captain Mata
Police Captain Anthony Mata was the guest speaker for our January 14, 2016 meeting. He is in charge of the Foothill Division here on the east side of San Jose. After an introductory remarks about the Division and the four districts within it, his presentation centered on the research of the San Jose Police Department into the use of Body Worn Cameras.

We learned that there are many aspects to the process beyond selecting and buying cameras.
Teams of experts are exploring everything from:
  • privacy issues, policies and legal rights to -
  • types of equipment to -
  • when to have them on to -
  • when to download videos to -
  • how long to store digital media to -
  • how much it's going to cost
The department plans to award a contract for the cameras in February or March this year. More information on the cameras may be found at:
bodycameras@sanjose.ca.gov

The steps in the process are available for review on the sjpd.org web site - under Next Steps.

January Programs

January continues to be a strong month for the meeting programs at the Rotary Club of San Jose East/Evergreen.

January 21, John Hogan, CEO of Teen Force, will discuss the job training program his organization does. The main thrust is help high school students get their first job. Teen Force is having a new initiative where they are looking to work with Eastside Union High School students to get into the job market. This program is within the mission of the Rotary Club of San Jose East/Evergreen to assist community members so it is a must see event. AND we induct John Goldstein during this meeting!

January 28, is the club level annual Richard D. King Speech Contest. Students from local Eastside Union High Schools will write and present their own speeches. The winner of the club contest goes on to compete in the area level and then regional level contests in Rotary District 5170. In addition to the students getting a venue to practice their speaking skills, there are cash prices for winners at the various levels of the contest.

Hope to see you at the club meetings. If you are not yet a member, these four meetings will give you a great feel for what the Rotary Club meetings are like. You will also get an overview of the types of areas and projects with which the club is becoming involved.

Charity Auction - We're Team 5!

We did well with our club's participation in last year's partnership with the RC San Jose Silicon Valley in their annual Charity Auction.
We got 50% of our ticket sales and received $765.00. We received another check for $1,763.00 represented 75% of the "bought price" of the auction items we donated. That's a total of $2,528.00!

Let's raise the bar on that total with our participation this year. The Auction is scheduled on Saturday, June 18, 2016
at the Holy Family Community Center, 4848 Pearl Avenue (near Branham), San José, CA.

It's not too soon to start soliciting auction items. Look for updates on ticket sale information and the auction item delivery deadline.
An updated donation acknowledgment letter for you to present to vendors is available on the home page of our website.

Lunch Count Confusion
we know
it's poor hygiene safety to bring a plate that's been eaten from back to get seconds
therefore
it's good hygiene to take another plate
but
The Ranch feels that they should charge for the number of used plates, not the number of people eating
so
we're trying a new system tomorrow:
  • each person will be given a 3x5 card that is marked EATING or NOT EATING
  • put the card where it is visible in front of you on the table
(talk about "counting cards")

We hope to take the angst out of calculating and paying the bill each week.

YOUR COOPERATION IS APPRECIATED!!!

Mr. Rogers' Words of Wisdom
If you grew up with our Neighborhood, you may remember how we sometimes talked about difficult things. There were days ... even beautiful days ... that weren't happy. In fact, there were some that were really sad.

Well, we've had a lot of days like that in our whole world. We've seen what some people do when they don't know anything else to do with their anger.

I'm convinced that when we help our children find healthy ways of dealing with their feelings--ways that don't hurt them or anyone else--we're helping to make our world a safer, better place.

I would like to tell you what I often told you when you were much younger: I like you just the way you are.

And what's more, I'm so grateful to you for helping the children in your life to know that you'll do everything you can to keep them safe and to help them express their feelings in ways that will bring healing in many different neighborhoods.
