Denise and John Tell Us about Themselves
Feb. 04, 2016
Our two newest members, Denise Henkes and John Goldstein, will be the program. They will each give a 15 minute talk about themselves, family, passions, etc. This program will be great for anyone interested in joining the club since they will see the high caliber of the people that join the Rotary Club of San Jose East/Evergreen (SJEE). It will also be a great time for longer term members we might not have seen for a while to get back into the swing of things. As you can tell, the club is starting to grow, we have inducted 5 new members since July 1, 2015. From serving on the District 5170 Membership Committee, I know that inducting 5 new members is one of the highest for any club in the District. With 3 members leaving (one unfortunately through death, one moving, one deciding Rotary was not her thing) we have a net gain of 2. There are more potential members that will shortly submit applications. Soooooooooo.......now is the time to help us grow the club...........................

Close Up Teaching Students about Life and Responsibilities of Individuals in a Denocracy
Mar. 17, 2016
Eleanor Vogelsang joined Close Up Foundation in September 2015 with over 10 years of experience working for non-profit organizations. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, as Community Relations Manager, Ms. Vogelsang builds support with local organizations and individuals and raises funds to support low-income students’ participation on Close Up programs. Prior to joining the foundation, she spent over 7 years at the College Board, lobbying various state governments and the Federal government to increase access to rigorous coursework in underserved communities. She has also supported Democratic candidates and causes through her polling work with the Feldman Group and campaign work for the Colorado Democratic Party. Ms. Vogelsang received her M.A. in Legislative Affairs from George Washington University and her B.A. from Colorado College. In 2014, only 36.3% of eligible voters turned out to vote in the United States. Youth aged 18-29 turned out at a significantly lower level than the national average, with only 19.9% showing up at the polls – the lowest recorded level since 18 years olds received the right to vote in 1971. Ensuring young people are prepared and motivated to actively participate in our democracy will be critical to the sustainability of our government. Close Up was founded in 1971 with a mission to inspire and empower students to be more civically minded citizens. Our week-long programs are rooted in a proven teaching methodology to foster long-term civic knowledge and community engagement. In my presentation, I will review the current status of civic education and discuss our work in the San Jose area. |

Project Amigo
Apr. 14, 2016
Project Amigo is a non-profit organization whose goal is to help poor rural children in the west-central state of Colima, Mexico achieve the education and skills they need to lift themselves and their families out of generations of poverty, and to build better and stronger communities. It also provides safe hands-on service opportunities in Colima for Rotarians and their families. (Please visit our website at www.projectamigo.org.) Between the Founders and former Executive Directors (Ted Rose and his wife Susan Hill) and Alex and Jenna Saldaña, more than 350 Rotary Clubs spoken to and 20 District Conferences in the US and Canada have been introduced to Project Amigo. The presentation helps new Rotarians and potential Rotarians visiting your club gain insight into the powerful family of Rotary; and it inspires “old” Rotarians to greater heights. We demonstrate what "ordinary" individuals have done when they envisioned an "extraordinary" possibility, and then worked together with other Rotarians to bring it about.
Alex Saldaña, Co-Executive Director of Project Amigo, is bilingual, bicultural, and has an array of other talents and skills. Alex grew up in Lomas del Real, Tamaulipas, Mexico, a poor town of 2,000 located on the Gulf Coast. He understands the challenges that children and adults face in poor rural Mexico. Alex graduated from the Technical University of Queretaro with a degree in production processes. After graduating from college in Mexico, he worked in production and manufacturing at Colgate Palmolive. After marrying Jenna, the other Co-Executive Director of Project Amigo, he moved to Boulder, CO, learned English, and worked for both for-profits and non-profits in multimedia and operations. Alex has international development experience in Ecuador. |

Reading Partners
May 19, 2016
Taryn is the South Bay Volunteer Coordinator for Reading Partners, serving with the organization through Americorps. She works primarily at the organization's 8 school sites in East San Jose, but also recruits volunteer tutors and does community outreach across the Silicon Valley. She is an avid reader and is passionate about promoting literacy and volunteerism. Literacy is the foundation of all successful learning. Without reading, students do not have the skills they need to be successful in their academic careers, and their life options are limited. In this presentation, Taryn will give an overview of the literacy landscape in the Silicon Valley and introduce Reading Partners, a literacy invention nonprofit looking to unlock the potential of elementary students that struggle with reading. She will also explain the integral role that community volunteers play within the organization. |
